For some people, electronic gadgets are the most intuitive tools on the planet. For others, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Well, that's not entirely their fault, as some gadgets just suffer from poor design. Digital cameras, however, are usually pretty well laid out with the user in mind. They tend to bury too many options in several layers of menus, but their getting better. Part of the challenge to digital camera designers to decide how to manage all the features crammed into these little boxes of silicone these days.
designers have the possibility that certain features of the camera is available with the software menus are available through the LCD screen. They also have the option of the same features available through the buttons, dials and levers on the camera body. They can also make some of the buttons and dials server two purposes. Very often, depending on what your mode (video, portrait, landscape, etc.) determines the function of other keys to perform. It can become difficult and confusing, if not handled in a logical manner.
Really, the best thing you can do is spend some time just playing around with a camera and taking pictures using a range of different options as possible. There's really nothing you can not break. Or at least should be if you had a decent camera. By decent, I'd draw the line at around $ 200 or more. If you paid anything significantly less than that for their camera, then it could be a camera and not the problem.
This can be useful if you have someone good with cameras and general gadget to help you out. Teenagers are usually helpful, because it all seems pretty intuitive to them. I think anyone born after 1995 comes with a silicon chip in their head or something. Pretty scary actually. Although, if they also come with a remote control that had a mute button, I could see the benefits.
The bottom line here is, just make sure you get a decent quality camera, and you should have no problem getting it to do what you want.
